Roofing below the Oquirrhs, next to the lake
Magna sits at the north end of the Oquirrh Mountains, just south of the Great Salt Lake. Why that matters to you: Magna gets weather straight off the lake, and a mix of mill-era homes and newer subdivisions means no two Magna roofs age the same way.
Pleasant Green, then the mill
Magna started as Pleasant Green, a farming settlement at the base of the Oquirrhs in 1868. In 1906 the Utah Copper Company, later Kennecott, began building its Magna Mill, and D.C. Jackling picked the name from the Latin word for great, per Magna’s history on Wikipedia. Mill workers lived in town and walked to work, and the neighborhoods around Main Street grew up to house them. Plenty of old homes are still standing: about 840 Magna homes were built in 1939 or earlier, per the census figures further down.
From metro township to city
Magna was a metro township starting in 2017, per Wikipedia. Then the Legislature passed H.B. 35, Metro Township Modifications, which turned every metro township into a municipality as of May 1, 2024, and Magna became a city. The Greater Salt Lake Municipal Services District still provides Magna’s city services, including building permits, so a reroof permit in Magna runs through the MSD. We pull the permit where it is required, so you do not have to sort that out.
Lake-effect snow on the west side
When cold air crosses the Great Salt Lake, it picks up moisture and drops it as snow downwind. A 1985 National Weather Service study of Great Salt Lake effect snowfall found that when the wind comes from the north-northwest, the western part of the Salt Lake Valley, where Magna sits, often gets heavy snow. Snow that melts and refreezes at the edge of the roof is how ice dams start, and where heat cable can earn its keep.
Old homes and new ones on the same streets
Most of Magna is newer than the mill. The median home was built in 1985, and the 1970s were the biggest building decade, with about 1,900 homes, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey figures on Census Reporter. We have 14 documented residential jobs in Magna, nearly all in the 84044 ZIP code. Every free inspection starts with the drone and ends with a dated photo report, whether you need a repair, a replacement, or nothing at all. Our inspectors are paid a salary, not commission. On shingle roofs we run GAF Timberline HDZ or CertainTeed Landmark Pro, the same shingles that come in our packages.
Just a reminder, we have financing options available. Learn more about financing, or you can schedule a free inspection or simply give us a call.
Recent work
Recent work in Magna
We’ve been in business since 2007, and Magna is a short drive northwest of our office in South Jordan. Here is one of our Magna jobs from the drone.
The whole roof from above
A two-story Magna home with a blue-gray shingle roof and a wood deck out back. From the drone you see every slope, vent, and edge at once, including the ones nobody can see from the yard. The owner gets those photos, dated, so you always know what we saw.
Nearby, we also work in West Valley City, Kearns, Taylorsville, Tooele, West Jordan.

Magna roofing questions
Questions we get all the time from Magna homeowners.
Do you offer financing?
Yes. Keeping your family safe comes first, so if money is tight, ask about our in-house financing. We regularly help families with it, and we have lending partners as well. Military, first responders, and teachers get an automatic $500 off.
Do you handle insurance?
We document everything your insurance company needs to see. We inspect, mark, photograph, and give them a complete dated report, and with your OK we answer your carrier’s questions about what we documented. We are roofers, not public adjusters, so we do not negotiate or file the claim for you, and we never promise a free roof. What we make sure of is that nothing on your roof goes undocumented.
What counts as an act of God?
Damage nobody caused. Hail, wind, lightning, a tree that came down in a storm. Nobody was careless and nobody skipped a repair, the weather just showed up. That is the kind of damage most homeowner policies are written for. What they usually will not cover is a roof that simply got old, which is exactly the line good photos win and bad photos lose.
How do I tell if I have storm damage?
From the driveway, usually you cannot. Look for shingle granules in the gutters or at the downspout, lifted or missing shingles after wind, dents on soft metal like vents and downspouts, and any new stain on an upstairs ceiling. If you spot any of it, get the free inspection and we will document every slope before it turns into a leak.
Do you work on roofs with solar panels?
Yes, start to finish. We hold the S202 Solar Photovoltaic classification on our Utah contractor license, so panels come off and go back on with the crew that does your roof. No second company, no second wait, and one warranty conversation instead of two.
Is Magna a city or a township?
A city, since May 1, 2024. Magna was a metro township from 2017 until a 2024 state law, H.B. 35, converted the metro townships and made Magna a city. City services, including building permits, still run through the Greater Salt Lake Municipal Services District. We pull the reroof permit where it is required, so that part is on us.
Does lake-effect snow reach Magna?
It can. Magna sits just south of the Great Salt Lake, and a National Weather Service study found that when the wind comes from the north-northwest, the western part of the Salt Lake Valley often gets heavy lake-effect snow. Snow that melts and refreezes at the eaves is how ice dams start, so on some roofs we recommend heat cable, and we will tell you straight if yours does not need it.
My home is one of Magna’s older ones. What should I know?
Look under the shingles, not just at them. Some Magna homes go back to the mill-town days, and older roofs often hide past repairs, older decking, or a second layer laid over the first. We tear off to the deck every time, replace soft decking instead of covering it up, and the first two sheets are on us.
How many roofs have you done in Magna?
14 documented residential jobs, counted from our own job records, nearly all of them in the 84044 ZIP code.
