Roofing on the old Camp Kearns grid
Kearns was built fast, first as an Army base and then as one of Utah’s fastest growing towns. Why that matters to you: a lot of Kearns homes are the same age as their neighbors, and they wear out on the same schedule.
It started as an Army base
Kearns is one of the most interesting places we work. Before the war it was dry farmland. Then, according to the Utah Division of State History’s history of Kearns, the Army built Camp Kearns on about 5,450 acres in 1942: 926 tarpaper buildings and, at its peak, 40,000 troops. After the war the base was declared surplus, and in July 1948 a New York company bought what the history calls a “ready-made housing development, complete with utilities, streets”. Kearns took off from there and became one of the fastest growing communities in Utah.
Ramblers, split-levels, and 1950s roofs
You can still read that growth in the houses. The Utah State Historic Preservation Office describes the postwar homes on this side of the valley as Minimal Traditional, Ranch, Contemporary, and Split-Level. And per the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey on Census Reporter, about one in four Kearns homes was built in the 1950s, the 1970s added even more, and the median home dates to 1977.
For a roof, that means two things. A 1950s home has been through several roofs already, and under the last one we often find older decking and past repairs. And split-levels have several roof sections that run into walls at different heights, and every one of those joints needs its flashing done right. We tear off to the deck every time and photograph every joint before the new shingles go on. On shingle roofs we install GAF Timberline HDZ or CertainTeed Landmark Pro, the same shingles that come in our packages.
From metro township to city
Kearns has a newer title, too. It was a metro township starting in 2017, and in 2024 the Legislature passed House Bill 35, which turned Utah’s metro townships into cities and towns. Building permits still go through the Greater Salt Lake Municipal Services District, which lists reroofing among the jobs that need one. We pull it for you.
The most famous roof in Kearns
Here is a fun one. The Utah Olympic Oval, where the long-track speed skating ran in the 2002 Winter Olympics, is in Kearns, and its roof hangs from steel cables nearly 400 feet long, strung between 24 masts like a suspension bridge. Your roof is a lot simpler, thankfully. We have 10 documented residential jobs in Kearns, most of them in the 84118 ZIP code, and every free inspection ends with a dated photo report. Our inspectors are paid a salary, not commission, so if your roof has years left, that is what we will tell you.
Just a reminder, we have financing options available. Learn more about financing, or you can schedule a free inspection or simply give us a call.
Recent work
Recent work in Kearns
We have been in business since 2007, and Kearns is a short drive northwest of our office in South Jordan. Here is some of our Kearns work from the drone.
A whole block from the air
From up here you can see how Kearns was laid out: straight streets, small lots, and rows of homes built around the same time. When one roof on the block is wearing out, the ones next to it usually are too. That is the view behind every free inspection we do here.
Every ridge, up close
The ridge is where a roof takes the most wind and where caps and vents meet. We get close enough to see each shingle, and you get the photos, so you know exactly what is up there without climbing a ladder.
Nearby, we also work in Taylorsville, West Valley City, Magna, West Jordan.

Kearns roofing questions
Questions we get all the time from Kearns homeowners.
Do you offer financing?
Yes. Tell us what monthly number works for your household, and we will show you what our lending partners and our own in-house financing can do with it. Military, first responders, and teachers get an automatic $500 off.
Do you handle insurance?
We bring the proof; the claim stays yours. We inspect, mark, photograph, and give your insurance company a complete dated report, and with your OK we answer their questions about what we documented. We are roofers, not public adjusters, so we do not negotiate or file the claim for you, and we never promise a free roof.
What counts as an act of God?
Damage nobody caused. Hail, wind, lightning, a tree that came down in a storm. Nobody was careless and nobody skipped a repair, the weather just showed up. That is the kind of damage most homeowner policies are written for. What they usually will not cover is a roof that simply got old, which is exactly the line good photos win and bad photos lose.
How do I tell if I have storm damage?
Start at the gutters, not the roof. Look for shingle granules in the gutters or at the downspout, lifted or missing shingles after wind, dents on soft metal like vents and downspouts, and any new stain on an upstairs ceiling. If you spot any of it, get the free inspection and we will document every slope before it turns into a leak.
Do you work on roofs with solar panels?
Yes, from start to finish. We hold the S202 Solar Photovoltaic classification on our Utah contractor license, so panels come off and go back on with the crew that does your roof. No second company, no second wait, and one warranty conversation instead of two.
Is Kearns a city now?
Yes. Kearns was a metro township starting in 2017, and in 2024 a state law, House Bill 35, turned Utah’s metro townships into cities and towns. Building permits still run through the Greater Salt Lake Municipal Services District.
Do I need a permit to re-roof in Kearns?
Yes. The Greater Salt Lake Municipal Services District, which handles building permits for Kearns, lists reroofing and reshingling among the projects that need one. We pull it for you.
My Kearns home was built in the 1950s. What should I expect?
A roof that has seen a lot of winters, and probably a few repairs. On homes that age we often find older decking and sometimes more than one layer of shingles. We tear off to the deck, replace soft decking instead of covering it up, and the first two sheets are on us.
How many roofs have you done in Kearns?
10 documented residential jobs, counted from our own job records, most of them in the 84118 ZIP code. Every one photographed.
