How Hill Field built Layton, and what the canyon wind does now
Layton grew up fast, and most of it grew up in the same thirty years. Why that matters to you: when a whole neighborhood was roofed in the same decade, it tends to come due in the same decade too, and Layton sits right where the east wind comes out of the canyon to test every one of those roofs.
From farm town to the biggest city in Davis County
Layton started in 1850 as farmland on the edge of Kaysville and became its own town in 1920, according to Layton City’s own history. Then Hill Field opened next door in 1940 and everything changed. The town went from 646 people in 1940 to 3,456 in 1950, and from about 22,900 in 1980 to about 41,800 in 1990, per the census figures on Wikipedia. By 1985 Layton had passed Bountiful as the biggest city in Davis County.
More than half of Layton’s homes went up from 1970 to 1999
That boom is still sitting on Layton’s rooftops. According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, more than half of the city’s roughly 29,000 homes were built between 1970 and 1999, and the 1970s alone account for more than 5,500 of them. About three in four are owner occupied. A lot of those roofs are on their first or second set of shingles and coming due together, street by street, which is why when one neighbor calls us, the next one often does too.
The wind out of Weber Canyon
Layton gets real wind. Hill Air Force Base sits near the mouth of Weber Canyon, and a University of Utah study calls its weather station the longest and most reliable record of downslope windstorms anywhere on the Wasatch Front. From 1953 to 1999 it logged east wind gusts over 50 mph about one and a half times a year, and its strongest gust, about 100 mph, came on April 4, 1983.
The same study says the December 1, 2011 windstorm did more than $75 million in damage along the Wasatch Front and was later declared a federal disaster. That morning, the Deseret News reported that high winds created widespread damage in Layton, and Davis County declared a local emergency. Wind like that finds the weak shingles first. If you are worried about your roof after a storm, let us know and we will have somebody there in less than 48 hours for a storm walkthrough.
Snow on the east side
Lake effect snow is common in Layton, and the homes on the east side, up toward the mountains, sit higher and colder than the ones near the freeway. That is where ice builds at the eaves and backs up under the shingles, and where ice and heat cable earns its keep. On shingle roofs we run GAF Timberline HDZ or CertainTeed Landmark Pro, the same shingles that come in our packages, and if your home already has solar panels, the same crew handles both.

Recent work
Recent work in Layton
We’ve been in business since 2007, and Layton is one of our busiest cities north of Salt Lake. Here are two of our Layton jobs.
A Layton street from the drone
From up here you see the whole roof, not just the front slope: the valleys, the back side, the trees leaning over the eaves. You also see the neighbors, built around the same time with roofs of the same age. That is the view behind every free inspection we do in Layton.
Hips, valleys, and a lot of edges
Straight down on a roof from the same Layton job. A roof cut up like this has a lot of edges and valleys, which is exactly where east wind and melting snow go looking for a way in, so those are the spots we photograph closest.
Nearby, we also work in Kaysville, Syracuse, Clearfield, Roy, Ogden.

Layton roofing questions
Questions we get all the time from Layton homeowners.
Do you offer financing?
Yes. One big bill can turn into a monthly one. We carry our own in-house financing, and our lending partners are there too, so the roof gets done when it needs to and not when the savings account says so. Military, first responders, and teachers get an automatic $500 off.
Do you handle insurance?
We inspect, mark, photograph, and give your insurance company a complete dated report. With your OK, we also answer your carrier’s questions about what we documented. We are roofers, not public adjusters, so we do not negotiate or file the claim for you, and we never promise a free roof. What we make sure of is that nothing on your roof goes undocumented.
What counts as an act of God?
Damage that nobody caused. Hail, wind, lightning, a tree that came down in a storm. Nobody was careless and nobody skipped a repair, the weather just showed up. That is the kind of damage most homeowner policies are written for. What they usually will not cover is a roof that simply got old, which is exactly the line good photos win and bad photos lose.
How do I tell if I have storm damage?
Usually not from the ground, and that is the problem. Look for shingle granules in the gutters or at the downspout, lifted or missing shingles after wind, dents on soft metal like vents and downspouts, and any new stain on an upstairs ceiling. If you spot any of it, get the free inspection and we will document every slope before it turns into a leak.
Do you work on roofs with solar panels?
Yes, in-house. We hold the S202 Solar Photovoltaic classification on our Utah contractor license, so panels come off and go back on with the crew that does your roof. No second company, no second wait, and one warranty conversation instead of two.
What do the east winds do to Layton roofs?
They go after the weak shingles first. Layton sits near the mouth of Weber Canyon, and University of Utah researchers found that from 1953 to 1999, Hill Air Force Base logged east wind gusts over 50 mph about one and a half times a year. Wind like that lifts tabs and works at edges and ridgelines. After a big wind, get the free inspection, and for storm damage we can have someone on site for a walkthrough in less than 48 hours.
Do Layton homes need heat cables?
Some do, mostly up on the east side. Lake effect snow is common here, and the closer your home sits to the mountains, the colder the roofline. Where snow melts and refreezes at the eaves, ice dams start. We install heat cable where the roof calls for it, and we will tell you straight if yours does not.
Does the military discount cover families at Hill?
Yes. Military, first responders, and teachers get an automatic $500 off, and that includes the families at Hill Air Force Base. You do not have to ask twice.
Do you pull permits in Layton?
Yes. We pull the reroof permit where the city requires one.
How many roofs have you done in Layton?
40+ documented residential jobs, counted from our own job records. 26 are in the 84041 ZIP code and 13 are in 84040. Every one photographed.
