Roofing for Murray's 1970s neighborhoods
Two out of three homes in Murray were built between 1950 and 1990. Why that matters to you: an older house can hide old decking and past repairs under its shingles, and what is under the shingles matters as much as the shingles.
A smelter town first
Murray was industrial before it was a suburb. The first smelter went up here in 1870, and over the next thirty years Murray became home to some of the largest smelters in the region. It became a city on January 3, 1903, per Murray’s history on Wikipedia. The smelting stopped in 1949, but the two big smokestacks stood over town until August 6, 2000, when they came down in about 15 seconds. The taller one was 455 feet, the Deseret News reported.
The postwar boom, and then the 1970s
The houses came after the war. Murray grew from about 9,000 people in 1950 to about 25,800 in 1980, per the same census figures. The U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey figures on Census Reporter put the median Murray home at 1978, with about 5,500 homes built in the 1970s alone, more than in any other decade. Under an older roof we often find older decking, past patch jobs, and sometimes a second layer laid right over the first. We tear off to the deck every time, replace soft decking instead of covering it up, and the first two sheets are on us.
Big trees on the older streets
Older neighborhoods mean older trees, and a lot of Murray streets are shaded by them. We love that about Murray. It does mean the roofs here work harder: leaves and needles pile up in the valleys and gutters and hold water against the shingles, and a limb over the ridge scrubs the granules off in the wind. On shingle roofs we run GAF Timberline HDZ or CertainTeed Landmark Pro, the same shingles that come in our packages.
Murray has had its own power company since 1913
Murray runs its own electric utility. Murray City Power was created in 1913 and serves about 18,000 customers, most of them homes. That matters if you want solar: Murray Power has its own net metering program and paperwork, and the city says it is revising the program. We hold the solar license, so if you are thinking about solar panels, or you already have them and need a new roof, one crew handles both.
Just a reminder, we have financing options available. Learn more about financing, or you can schedule a free inspection or simply give us a call.

Murray roofing questions
Questions we get all the time from Murray homeowners.
Do you offer financing?
Yes, through a lending partner or directly with us. Our in-house financing is there for families who need it, and you see the real monthly numbers with your estimate before you decide anything. Military, first responders, and teachers get an automatic $500 off.
Do you handle insurance?
Our part is the documentation. We inspect, mark, photograph, and give your insurance company a complete dated report, and with your OK we answer your carrier’s questions about what we documented. We are roofers, not public adjusters, so we do not negotiate or file the claim for you, and we never promise a free roof. What we make sure of is that nothing on your roof goes undocumented.
What counts as an act of God?
Damage nobody caused. Hail, wind, lightning, a tree that came down in a storm. Nobody was careless and nobody skipped a repair, the weather just showed up. That is the kind of damage most homeowner policies are written for. What they usually will not cover is a roof that simply got old, which is exactly the line good photos win and bad photos lose.
How do I tell if I have storm damage?
Mostly you cannot, from the ground. Look for shingle granules in the gutters or at the downspout, lifted or missing shingles after wind, dents on soft metal like vents and downspouts, and any new stain on an upstairs ceiling. If you spot any of it, get the free inspection and we will document every slope before it turns into a leak.
Do you work on roofs with solar panels?
Yes, and we do not hand it off. We hold the S202 Solar Photovoltaic classification on our Utah contractor license, so panels come off and go back on with the crew that does your roof. No second company, no second wait, and one warranty conversation instead of two.
How old are most roofs in Murray?
Many Murray homes are 45 years old or more. The median Murray home was built in 1978, and about one in four went up in the 1970s alone. Roofs that age have often been redone before, and some still have an old layer under the current one. We tear off to the deck every time so nothing old gets buried.
Is solar different in Murray?
Yes, because Murray runs its own power company. Murray City Power has its own net metering program and its own interconnection paperwork, and the city says it is revising that program, so the rules can change. Ask us during the inspection and we will walk you through what the city asks for today.
Do Murray’s big trees matter for my roof?
They do. A lot of Murray’s older streets have mature trees right over the houses. Leaves fill the valleys and gutters and hold water against the shingles, and a limb rubbing the roof wears the granules off. We check for all of it on every inspection and photograph what we find.
Do you pull permits in Murray?
Yes. We pull the reroof permit where the city requires one.
How many roofs have you done in Murray?
13 documented residential jobs, counted from our own job records: 7 in 84107, and 3 each in 84121 and 84123.
