Wind, snow, and Utah's second settlement
Bountiful homes climb the side of the mountain, and Davis County gets big wind and real snow. Why that matters to you: a roof up on the hill takes more weather than a roof down on the flat, so small problems turn into leaks faster.
Settled in 1847
Bountiful is one of the oldest places in Utah. Perrigrine Sessions settled here on September 27, 1847, which made it Utah’s second settlement, after Salt Lake City. It was called Sessions’ Settlement until it was named Bountiful in 1855, and it became a city in 1892, according to Bountiful City’s own history.
Most of the houses came much later. Bountiful nearly tripled in the 1950s, from about 6,000 people in 1950 to about 17,000 in 1960, per the census figures on Wikipedia, and today the neighborhoods climb high up the slopes of the Wasatch. The homes from that boom are 60-plus years old now, well past their first roof, and whole streets of them come due around the same time.
Davis County windstorms
Davis County knows wind. On December 1, 2011, a windstorm sent gusts to 102 mph in Centerville, right next door, and at 9 that night 40 percent of Bountiful homes were still without power, the Deseret News reported. Wind like that finds the weak shingles first: it lifts tabs and works at edges and ridgelines. If you are worried about your roof after a storm, let us know and we will have somebody there in less than 48 hours for a walkthrough.
Snow on the hill
Bountiful sits at about 4,800 feet downtown and averages close to 60 inches of snow a year, and the homes up the hill sit higher and colder than that. That is where ice builds at the eaves, and where ice and heat cable earns its keep. On shingle roofs we run GAF Timberline HDZ or CertainTeed Landmark Pro, the same shingles that come in our packages.
Bountiful has its own power company
Here is one most people do not know until they ask about solar: Bountiful runs its own utility, Bountiful City Light & Power, and the city sends solar questions and applications through its Building Department. We hold the solar license, so if you are thinking about solar panels, or you already have them and need a roof, one crew handles both.
Just a reminder, we have financing options available. Learn more about financing, or you can schedule a free inspection or simply give us a call.
Recent work
Recent work in Bountiful
Bountiful is just north of Salt Lake City, up on the hill. Here is some of our work in town.
A wood shake roof on the hill
A Bountiful home with a wood shake roof and the whole valley below it. Shake ages differently from shingles: it dries out, splits, and curls over the years. If you have a shake roof, the free inspection tells you how much life it has left.
Bountiful in the winter
Close to 60 inches of snow a year means roofs here spend a lot of the winter covered. Snow that melts and refreezes at the edge is how ice dams start. Weather dependent, we keep working through the winter months.
Nearby, we also work in North Salt Lake, Centerville, Woods Cross, Salt Lake City.

Bountiful roofing questions
Questions we get all the time from Bountiful homeowners.
Do you offer financing?
Yes. Spread the cost of a new roof over time with in-house financing or one of our lending partners. We walk you through it at the inspection. Military, first responders, and teachers get an automatic $500 off.
Do you handle insurance?
We inspect, mark, photograph, and give your insurance company a complete dated report. With your OK, we also answer your carrier’s questions about what we documented. We are roofers, not public adjusters, so we do not negotiate or file the claim for you, and we never promise a free roof. What we make sure of is that nothing on your roof goes undocumented.
What counts as an act of God?
Damage nobody caused. Hail, wind, lightning, a tree that came down in a storm. Nobody was careless and nobody skipped a repair, the weather just showed up. That is the kind of damage most homeowner policies are written for. What they usually will not cover is a roof that simply got old, which is exactly the line good photos win and bad photos lose.
How do I tell if I have storm damage?
From the ground, mostly you cannot, and that is the problem. Look for shingle granules in the gutters or at the downspout, lifted or missing shingles after wind, dents on soft metal like vents and downspouts, and any new stain on an upstairs ceiling. If you spot any of it, get the free inspection and we will document every slope before it turns into a leak.
Do you work on roofs with solar panels?
Yes, in-house. We hold the S202 Solar Photovoltaic classification on our Utah contractor license, so panels come off and go back on with the crew that does your roof. No second company, no second wait, and one warranty conversation instead of two.
What do Davis County windstorms do to Bountiful roofs?
They find the weak shingles first. In the December 2011 windstorm, gusts hit 102 mph in Centerville, right next door, and 40 percent of Bountiful homes were still without power that night. Wind like that lifts tabs and works at edges and ridgelines. After a big wind, get the free inspection and we will document every slope, and we can have someone on site for a storm walkthrough in less than 48 hours.
Do Bountiful homes need heat cables?
On the hill, often yes. Bountiful averages close to 60 inches of snow a year, and the higher your home sits on the slope, the colder your roofline gets. Ice builds at the eaves and backs up under the shingles. We install heat cable where the roof calls for it, and we will tell you straight if yours does not.
Is solar different in Bountiful?
A little, because Bountiful runs its own power company. Bountiful City Light & Power serves the city, and the city sends solar questions and applications through its Building Department. We are licensed for solar, so we can walk you through it and handle the panels with the same crew that does your roof.
Do you pull permits in Bountiful?
Yes. We pull the reroof permit where the city requires one.
How many roofs have you done in Bountiful?
20 documented residential jobs, counted from our own job records, all of them in the 84010 ZIP code. Every one photographed.
